November 20 – To PEE or Not to PEE
This seminar provides a systematic review of renal anatomy and physiology, starting with the embryologic development of 3 sets of kidneys (not a typo!), followed by an in-depth discussion of the 6 major functions of the kidney and finishing with “What can go wrong?” The “What can go wrong?” part includes acute kidney injury and its numerous causes, chronic renal failure and its numerous causes (THINK diabetes and hypertension), nephrotoxic drugs and toxins, the “geriatric kidney” and how the kidney is an “innocent bystander” in various forms of chronic systemic illness—including autoimmune diseases, heart failure and diabetes. Barb will also review important lab tests –urinalysis, renal ultrasound, BUN and creatinine, the eGFR and other relevant tests.
November 21 – The BIG “C”
This seminar provides an update and overview on the pathophysiology of cancer, how it starts, how it spreads, the role of genetics, the role of the environment (viruses, hormones, chemicals, etc.) as well as many other facts about the growth and differentiation of cells. Nomenclature and the grading and staging of tumors will be explained. Why are we diagnosing cancers in younger patients, especially colorectal cancer? Specific cancers will be mentioned including breast, ovarian, endometrial and cervical cancer; prostate, testicular, colorectal, kidney and bladder cancer; and lung cancer, skin cancer, leukemia, Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and multiple myeloma. Barb will also discuss tumor markers (PSA, CA-125, estrogen and progesterone receptors) and how their absence or presence can influence chemotherapy and biological therapy choices.
