Join Barb for a 3-hour webinar on the 3 D’s. Barb will discuss each of these conditions separately, even though the three may co-exist in one patient. She will also describe the age-related presentation of depression using the SALSA signs for younger patients and the “P’s and the D’s” for the older patient. The IN/OUT diagnostic approach to delirium recognizes that all etiologies of delirium can be divided into four categories—IN the brain, OUT of the brain, Drugs IN and Drugs OUT. There are numerous causes of dementia— some of which are preventable and some of which are reversible. We’re all worried about what aging does to our nervous system—did I forget my keys because I’m old or did I forget my keys because I have dementia? What does hearing loss have to do with dementia? Do vitamin deficiencies contribute to dementia? Does estrogen therapy provide protection? Is family history a major risk factor in any of the D’s? Why do 50% of individuals with Down syndrome develop dementia at the age of 50? Who knew that treating delirium and/or depression improves cognitive function in patients with dementia? Barb will discuss common pharmacologic treatments for all three D’s in addition to “alternative and complementary” types of therapy including weight loss, melatonin, sunlight, acupuncture, B12, zinc, exercise, sleep, and more.
