Integrating the AACN Essentials Into the Curriculum: The Educator’s Role

The 2021 AACN Essentials consists of 10 domains articulated by competencies and sub-competencies for each domain, creating a scaffold for curriculum development. This presentation will discuss step by step processes that can be taken to move faculty colleagues toward a competency-based curriculum aligned with the 2021 Essentials. Approaches for conducting an effective curriculum mapping for competency-based education will be demonstrated. Strategies to engage colleagues in the innovative work of developing and growing competency-based teaching activities and assessments will be discussed. Examples for application of the sub-competencies appropriate to prelicensure, RN-BSN, and graduate education will be shared along with ideas to operationalize this new alignment on a small and large scale.
