Academic dishonesty and professional misconduct are not new topics to nursing education, but the prevalence seems to be on the increase. Professional behaviors and academic integrity are essential to the nursing profession and the lack of these behaviors can have a detrimental effect on the nursing profession and ultimately the care provided to clients (Amsberry, 2022). While nurse educators know academic dishonesty occurs and have experienced professional misconduct by students, how these topics are prevented and dealt with is not always as clear cut and simple as it may seem. Policies and processes must be in place and often influenced by the host institutions (Abbott & Nininger, 2021).
Through this interactive webinar, information pertaining to the prevalence of academic dishonesty will be discussed. Information regarding professional misconduct behaviors such as incivility, bullying, and contra-power harassment (Christensen, et al., 2020). The presenter will also discuss the process used to develop a formal Professional Conduct Council and how to utilize it to dissuade and develop professional behaviors and academic integrity (AI) in nursing students.
Finally, participants will have the opportunity to review cases of academic dishonesty and professional misconduct. During the review, participants will discuss and develop actions to handle these situations to benefit the educators and to aide in the professional development of the student involved.
